Building a Community Greenhouse Garden Project

Summit Preventive Alliance won a grant through Live Well Colorado to build a community garden located at the Senior Center and a Hoop House located at Dillon Valley Elementary. SPA and Live Well Colorado have hired Alpine Earth Center to build these hoop houses. We are very excited to start working on this project and have big plans we will continue to keep you updated on the progress.

One of the major reasons behind this project is the unprecedented demand in the last 12 months the Summit County food bank has experienced. With a 400% increase of people served from last year, this has placed a huge burden on Summit County. SPA, Live Well Colorado, and Alpine Earth Center are excited to help alleviate this problem through designing, building, and growing nutritious foods to our food banks at a very low cost. "Community Gardens create a venue for community members to gather and socialize. Empowerment and self-sufficiency become the true and valuable ends." -Joanna Rybak, Summit Preventive Alliance.

Imagine ultra-local, fresh produce growing right next door to the Community & Senior Center!!!  NEW greenhouses to grow your own arugula, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, chives, cilantro, mint, sage, thyme, and other favorite veggies!  The Summit Prevention Alliance, with generous support from LiveWell Colorado, needs volunteers for planning and operation of 3 temporary 60-foot greenhouses.  These covered gardens will provide food banks with fresh, local produce and give Summit County Seniors a community gathering place to grow their own vegetables and socialize too! Volunteer to get involved in our own "ultra-local food" movement.  Join the Senior Greenhouse Gardening Advisory Committee and/or volunteer in the greenhouses in exchange for garden plots if you are a Summit County Senior. Beginner gardeners welcome. No experience necessary. Contact Joanna Rybak at S.P.A. for more information, to sign up to volunteer or if you are interested in having a garden plot at: 970-453-9333 or joanna@summitpreventionalliance.org.  Eat local!

Hi Everyone!

We made history in Summit County yesterday – Sat, May 15 at the Community & Senior Center in Frisco. The 1st community gardening greenhouse in Summit County, CO is up! Thank you to everyone that came out yesterday to help and were part of this very special greenhouse ground breaking!

This community greenhouse project needs a name and the plot holders will be meeting tomorrow morning to think about a name and go over their plots. For all the plot holders that will be coming to the 9am Plot Holder meeting with Holle, please stay if you can to help build more raised beds, greenhouses and dress up the grounds. The help we have had is invaluable. However, we still need more help.

Each individual greenhouse needs a name! Naming rights can be bought for $2500 for each of 3 greenhouses. Help support this community project and name the greenhouse! Please let me know if anyone is interested in buying naming rights for the greenhouse. I’ll be sending out more information on the fundraising campaign soon.

We have a video on YouTube on the Wed, May 12 workday thanks to Jon Harrington for filming and posting it. You may find yourself in it. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQijCEX9WyA

The next workday is tomorrow, Saturday, May 22, at 9am. We will have coffee/tea and light breakfast snacks for you. Volunteers have been working in the rain, shine & snow. Experienced carpenters, builders and non-professional people are all needed! Please come out and support this community project.  Please bring the following if you have: hammers, gloves, shovels, rakes, wheel barrows, 150’ #10 extension cord and a power drill.

Please join the fun! Please pass on this e-mail to your friends!
